Books I’m trying to get through right now

1. Real Marriage: The Truth About Sex, Friendship, & Life Together, by Mark and Grace Driscoll. This husband and wife team have written an excellent guide for marriage which weaves their true-life experiences with honesty and candor. This book is published by RE:Lit, which I understand is a publishing ministry of Mars Hill, the church that Driscoll pastors.

2. Redemption: Freed by Jesus From the Idols We Worship and the Wounds We Carry, by Mike Wilkerson. Pastor Mike Wilkerson of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, addresses many of the emotional and psychological baggage we carry with meditations from the book of Exodus. However, this is not just a book highlighting what’s wrong with us, but more so a book that celebrates the sovereignty and sufficiency of God to free us through Jesus Christ. This book is also published by RE:Lit.

3. Regret Free Living: Hope for Past Mistakes and Freedom from Unhealthy Patterns, by Stephen Arterburn. To be honest, I haven’t started this book yet. Stephen Arterburn, founder of New Life Ministries applies Christian and biblical texts to address unhealthy patterns in a positive way to help readers to get beyond recognizing habitual and painful sins to help them to set healthy patterns.

I think I’m going to have to hold off on Arterburn’s book until I finish the other two books. Not because of any negative feelings, but because I’m finding it a challenge to find enough time to be preparing my weekly sermons while planning next week’s sermons and reading three books that deal with heavy emotional and psychological issues.

However, I am enjoying the process of learning and growing as I read through the Driscolls’ and Wilkerson. My prayer is that I will read these humbly as a man needing the Spirit’s touch in my life of purity and seeking to live out God’s will for my marriage and for my children. As God changes my heart and marriage and family life, I pray that I will learn to be a better pastor to guide our people.
